The TerraMaster D5-Hybrid is the world’s first hybrid direct attached storage, combining the best of both worlds: high-capacity HDD storage and ultra-fast M.2 NVMe SSD caching. This unique 5-bay enclosure features two bays for 3.5″/2.5″ SATA drives (configurable in RAID 0, RAID 1, JBOD, or Single) and three dedicated slots for M.2 NVMe SSDs. Connected via a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, it provides a 10Gbps pipeline for rapid data access. The D5-Hybrid is an exceptional solution for creative professionals who need a tiered storage system for fast project access and long-term archiving in a single, compact unit.

  • Q. What is the "hybrid" nature of the D5-Hybrid?
    The D5-Hybrid is unique because it offers two different types of storage bays:

    • 2 x SATA Bays: These bays support 3.5-inch SATA HDDs and 2.5-inch SATA HDDs/SSDs. They are designed for large-capacity storage (cold data) and support hardware RAID (RAID 0, RAID 1, Single Disk, and JBOD).
    • 3 x NVMe SSD Slots: These slots are for M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs, providing extremely high-speed storage (hot data). The NVMe SSDs operate only in single-disk mode, meaning they are seen as individual drives by your computer and do not support RAID configurations internally.
  • Q. What RAID levels are supported by the D5-Hybrid?
    The D5-Hybrid supports hardware RAID for the two SATA bays only. The supported RAID modes are:

    • RAID 0 (Striping): For maximum performance, combining the capacity of both drives.
    • RAID 1 (Mirroring): For data redundancy, mirroring data across both drives.
    • JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks): Treats the drives as individual, concatenated storage.
    • Single Disk: Each drive is recognized as a separate, independent volume. The three NVMe SSD slots operate only in single-disk mode.
  • Q. What is the maximum storage capacity of the D5-Hybrid?
    The D5-Hybrid can accommodate a significant amount of storage:

    • Up to 22 TB per SATA drive (for 3.5" HDDs).
    • Up to 8 TB per M.2 NVMe SSD. This allows for a total raw storage capacity of up to 68 TB (2 x 22 TB HDDs + 3 x 8 TB NVMe SSDs). Actual usable capacity will depend on the RAID configuration chosen for the SATA drives.
  • Q. What kind of performance can I expect from the D5-Hybrid?
    The D5-Hybrid features a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) interface, which offers high-speed data transfer.

    • With a single NVMe SSD, read speeds can reach up to 980 MB/s.
    • With two SATA SSDs in RAID 0, read speeds can reach up to 960 MB/s.
    • With two SATA HDDs in RAID 0, read/write speeds can reach around 521 MB/s. Some models might even support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps), offering even higher speeds (e.g., up to 1900 MB/s with three NVMe SSDs). It's crucial to verify the specific model's USB interface.
  • Q. Is it easy to install and swap drives in the D5-Hybrid?
    Yes, TerraMaster has designed the D5-Hybrid for easy installation.

    • The SATA drive bays feature a tool-free hard drive tray design with a "Push-lock" mechanism for secure and easy insertion/removal.
    • For the M.2 NVMe SSDs, there's a convenient side-sliding cover on the chassis and hand-tightened screws, allowing for quick installation.
